In this second episode of our architectural road-trip Naples-Matera, we are going to explore this truly extraordinary city. Matera is a city in southern Italy's Basilicata region, that represents one of the most dramatic stories of urban transformation, cultural revival, and human resilience in modern history. Matera is built around two ancient districts called the Sassi, which means "stones" in Italian. They are entire cave cities carved into limestone rock, where streets run on top of houses, and houses are dug directly into the rock itself. "This isn't architecture imposed on nature—it's architecture that grew from nature." Find the 1st episode about Renzo Piano' most unusial projetc Vulcano Buono, and Monticchio Lakes.
On the road from one unique Italian city - Naples to another - Matera, shaped like a volcano and designed around a central piazza, one of Renzo Piano’s most unusual works Vulcano Buono blurs the line between architecture, landscape, and public space. In this video, we will explore why this building is so special. Then we will drive East to see one undiscovered place where an ancient volcano shaped this entire landscape - Monticchio Lakes. This is the first day of our small architectural Italy road trip. Archwalks is held by Musa Architects ApS: https://www.musaoffice.eu/
